Careers

Careers Adviser, Mick McKinley manages the school’s career programs. All students in Years 10 to 12 are surveyed about their career plans. They are then individually case managed and offered a variety of courses and career activities that are most likely to meet their needs.

Career development opportunities at Lambton High School include:

• Careers counselling which includes appropriate subject selection, matching student's interests to appropriate careers

• Career pathway support such as resume writing, interview and presentation skills

• Organising talks, access to service providers and potential employers, for information on employment requirements

• Conducting careers excursions

• Work experience organisation with local businesses and community partners

• Careers lessons and group work

• Career workshops - The aim of these is to raise awareness about the diversity of employment opportunities so that younger students start investigating employment possibilities

• Study skills tutorials for senior students

• Support of students undertaking School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships and industry scholarships. These students have paid on-the-job experience and complete an industry related TAFE credential

• Preparation and support for student application for Tertiary study at TAFE or University.

• Organisation and support for the EVET programs. Year 11 and 12 students can attend TAFE and complete these courses as part of their HSC program. The TAFE competencies they gain may help them with either a future career or further TAFE training after the HSC.

• The Careers Mentoring Program provides trained community mentors for students unsure about what they might like to do when they leave school. Year 10 and Year 11 students participate by invitation.

Students are welcome to drop in and make an appointment at any time. Parents can call if they have questions or concerns.

Lambton High School Careers Website

Lambton High School has its own career website. Students and parents can use this site for a wide range of career information. This site is particularly useful for students in the senior years; however, other students can access information on part time employment while they are still at school. Students will register in the "Student Only" area during their Careers lessons where they will be able to make use of many of the proformas available. They can develop a resume, a cover letter, find out how to act in an interview, what to wear for an interview and many other things.

Senior Learning Centre

The Senior Learning Centre including the Careers Office is an engaging study space available to our senior students. With the support of our expert staff in the centre, students are provided with study skills; a variety of study techniques; and support in planning and completing assessment tasks and setting educational and career goals.

This year, we are continuing to revamp the Learning Centre, including new furniture and whiteboard tables. A growth mindset is encouraged in this space, as we believe it is important that our students keep trying, striving for their goals, and never give up. Students are encouraged to embrace challenges, learn from their mistakes, and continue to build their skills and understanding.

Throughout the year students are supported by the Career Advisers to gain part time work by booking in for assistance with writing resumes, completing job applications, cover letters and preparing for job interviews. Students participate in Work Experience and Year 12 participate in writing action and exit plans. Providing students with information about subject selection and further training at university or TAFE after the completion of Year 10 and Higher School Certificate continues to be an important part of all our career programs. There are plenty of programs that are offered for our students here at LHS.
