Year 10

In Year 10, students consolidate Stage 5 learning, achieving Stage 5 course grades for their Record of School Achievement (RoSA; which is finalised upon completion with Year 11 grades), and begin preparing for Stage 6 (HSC courses).

At Lambton High School, Year 10 marks the beginning of our senior cohort. Students wear white senior shirts to symbolise their transition into the senior school, representing growing independence, maturity, and leadership. The focus is on increasing independence, managing assessment schedules effectively, and planning for future study or vocational directions.

Careers Lessons and Work Experience

All Year 10 students participate in one lesson per fortnight with the Careers Adviser, focusing on preparing for post-school options including work, TAFE, apprenticeships, and university pathways. Work Experience is offered in a variety of formats, with many students also completing credentials such as White Cards or workplace-readiness certificates. This program helps students explore career interests, understand employer expectations, and develop essential workplace skills.

Senior Mentoring Sessions

By Year 10, the GEM framework (Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness) from The Resilience Project is well established. Mentoring sessions, held for 20 minutes each week, focus on managing study skills and maintaining wellbeing as students adapt to the additional pressures and expectations of senior schooling.

Assessment tasks are scheduled progressively across the year to support learning in each subject.
A detailed overview, including due dates and policies, is available in the Assessment Information section below.

Class Structure & Progression

Year 10 classes at Lambton High School are designed to consolidate Stage 5 learning while preparing students for the increased independence and subject choice of Stage 6.

Core Class Structure

Each Key Learning Area (KLA) forms its own classes based on student achievement data and teacher recommendations from the previous year. English, Mathematics, Science, HSIE, and PDHPE may stream classes independently to best support student learning.
The L, and T, classes remain the academically higher-achieving groups, while other classes are typically mixed-ability, reflecting the diversity of learners across the cohort.

Class formation is overseen by the Head Teachers of each KLA, in consultation with the Learning Support Team (LST) and Year Adviser, to ensure balanced class structures and equitable access to support. Adjustments or targeted assistance are provided where needed to support student learning and wellbeing.

Elective Classes

Students continue studying the two elective subjects they began in Year 9. Each elective runs for 200 hours across Years 9 and 10, providing continuity, skill progression, and deeper understanding within areas of personal interest.

In addition, students study two semesterised Senior Foundation electives, which allow exploration and development of the skills required for Stage 6 across a range of Key Learning Areas. These courses are designed to build confidence, academic readiness, and familiarity with the expectations of senior study.

Progression to Stage 6

During Term 2, students engage in the Stage 6 Subject Selection process, supported through information sessions, teacher guidance, and a Parent Information Evening.

A defining feature of Lambton High School’s transition process is the Senior Subject Selection Interviews, held onsite in Term 2. Each student meets with a member of the school executive to discuss goals, interests, and subject choices, ensuring selections are well aligned with individual strengths and post-school pathways.

These choices determine the courses undertaken for the Higher School Certificate (HSC) and contribute to completion of the Record of School Achievement (RoSA).

School-Based Assessment

Assessment plays a key role in helping students demonstrate what they know and can do, while providing teachers and families with meaningful feedback on learning progress across Stage 5.

The Year 10 Course and Assessment Handbook (PDF) outlines all assessment tasks, weightings, and key expectations for each subject. It also includes important policies on submission, late work, and academic integrity.

Within the handbook, families will also find the Assessment Planner, which provides an at-a-glance schedule of all formal assessment tasks for the year. This planner helps students manage their time effectively and prepare for busy assessment periods in advance.

If a student is absent or unable to complete an assessment due to illness or misadventure, they should complete an Illness/Misadventure Form, available on their Year 10 Canvas homepage. Supporting documentation (such as a medical certificate) should be submitted promptly.

Applications for Years 7–9 are managed by the relevant Head Teacher, while Years 10–12 are managed by the Deputy Principal.

Assessment results and feedback are provided through Canvas and Sentral, allowing students and families to monitor progress and identify areas for improvement.

Year 10 assessment outcomes contribute to the Record of School Achievement (RoSA), which records student grades at the completion of Stage 5 before transitioning into senior studie

External Assessments

Throughout the year, Year 10 students may participate in statewide or national assessments that provide valuable insights into their learning progress and help guide future teaching and support programs.

VALID – Science
All Year 10 students complete the VALID (Validation of Assessment for Learning and Individual Development) Science assessment. This online test assesses students’ understanding of key scientific concepts and skills, providing useful feedback to both students and teachers.

Other Assessments
Occasionally, students may take part in additional national or international assessments, such as PISA or TIMSS, which evaluate broader learning trends. Participation in these programs is typically sample-based and may involve selected classes or cohorts only.

Families are notified through SchoolBytes and the school newsletter if additional assessments occur, including details about scheduling and permissions.

Excursions & Wellbeing Activities

Excursions and wellbeing activities help students extend learning beyond the classroom and develop teamwork, resilience, and community connections.

Work Experience Program
An optional component of Year 10, Work Experience takes place throughout the year.
Students organise their placement with support from the Careers Office and teachers. Preparation includes safety briefings and goal-setting sessions.
